Decimal Fraction

A Fraction where the denominator is the power of 10 such as 10, 100, and 1000 so on it is called a decimal fraction. A decimal fraction can be written with a decimal point and with no denominator. It makes calculations easier on fractions.

Example: \(\frac { 1 }{ 10 } \)  is a decimal fraction and it can be shown as  0.1

\(\frac { 1 }{ 100 } \) is a decimal fraction and it can be shown as 0.01

\(\frac { 1 }{ 1000 } \)  is a decimal fraction and it can be shown as 0.001

Like Decimal Fractions – Definition

Like Decimal fractions are nothing but the two fractions having the same number of decimal places(i.e they have the same number of digits after the decimal point). These decimals help to make calculations easier.

Example: 121.8, 56.9, and 65.9 are said to be like decimal fractions.

Because those numbers are having only one digit after the decimal point they have 1 decimal place.

Like Fractions Examples

Example 1.

How many decimal places are there in the following? Check whether they are like decimal fractions are not?

a) 9.78

b) 6.897

c) 7.3424

Solution:

a) In 9.78, there are 2 decimal places.

b) In 6.897, there are 3 decimal places.

c) In 7.3424, there are 4 decimal places.

Since all the decimals given are having different decimal places they aren’t like decimals.

Example 2.

How many decimal places are there in the following?

a) 128.98

b) 676.111

Solution:

a) In 128.98, there are 2 decimal places.

b) In 676.111, there are 3 decimal places.

Since both of the decimals aren’t having the same decimal places they aren’t like decimals.

How to Convert an Unlike Decimal to Like Decimal?

Follow the simple procedure listed below to change between Unlike Decimals to Like Decimals. They are as below

Step 1: Find the largest number of decimal places in the given numbers.

Step 2: Add zeros in the decimal places to the numbers to equal the highest decimal places count.

Note: Adding zero on the extreme right of the digit of a decimal part does not change the value of a decimal number. So, we can convert unlike decimals to like decimal by putting zero on the extreme right of the digit of the decimal part of the decimal number.

Example 1:

Convert the following into like decimals

9.8, 8.98, 6.399, 3.9842

Solution:

Given numbers are

9.8, 8.98, 6.399, 3.9842

Now, find the largest number of decimal places in the given numbers

9.8 has 1 decimal place.

8.98 has 2 decimal places.

6.399 has 3 decimal places.

3.9842 has 4 decimal places.

Among these numbers, the highest number of decimal places is 4

Now we will add zeroes to the extreme right of the last digit of the decimal part of each decimal number so that each decimal number has  4 decimal places.

So, by adding zeros to the numbers we can make those into like decimals.

9.8000, 8.9800, 6.3990, 3.9842.

Example 2:

Convert the following into like decimals

7.87, 6.2, 1.298, 2.7

Solution:

Given numbers are

7.87, 6.2, 1.298, 2.7

7.87 has 2 decimal places.

6.2 has 1 decimal place.

1.298 has 3 decimal places.

2.7 has 1 decimal place

Now, find the largest number of decimal places in the given numbers

Among these numbers, the highest number of decimal places is 3

Now we will add zeroes to the extreme right of the last digit of the decimal part of each decimal number so that each decimal number has 3 decimal places.

So, by adding zeros to the numbers we can make those into like decimals.

7.870, 6.200, 1.298, 2.700

Example 3:

Convert the following into like decimals

1.45, 6.78, 9.871

Solution:

Given numbers are

1.45, 6.78, 9.871

1.45  has 2 decimal places.

6.78 has 2 decimal places.

9.871 has 3 decimal places.

Now, find the largest number of decimal places in the given numbers

Among these numbers, the highest number of decimal places is 3
