Time – Definition
Time is defined as the indefinite continuous progression in which the action or process or events occurs. The basic unit of time is seconds. We can also measure time in hours, minutes, seconds, Days, Weeks, Months, Years, etc. We can measure time using the clock.
Clock
Time is usually based on a 12-hour clock. The clock has 12 numbers from 1 to 12. On the clock, we can observe three hands i.e. hour hand, minute hand, and seconds hand. Hours hand represents hours, the minute hand represents minutes, and the second’s hand represents seconds.
Hours hand is the shorter of three hands and it completes one rotation in 12 hours in a normal 12 hours clock. The minute hand moves slowly and completes one rotation in 60 minutes. The second’s hand moves very quickly and completes a rotation in 60 seconds. For every rotation of the second hand, the minute hand will move from 1-minute mark to the next. We use A.M to tell the time from midnight to noon(i.e. 12 from midnight to 12 afternoons) P.M for the time running from noon to Midnight(12 from afternoon to 12 Midnight).
How to Read Time on a Clock?
While seeing the time on a clock or a watch to know the time we have to first see the position of the hour hand and minute hand of the clock. If the hour hand is on any number it represents the number itself as the hour but if it is before the next number, the first number represents the hour.
If the minute hand is on any number or after it before the next number then the minutes = first number × 5 + small division.
Telling Time on a Clock Examples
Example 1:
The hour’s hand is on 9 and the minute’s hand is on 12. What is the time?
Solution:
The time is 9 o’clock, i.e., 9:00
Example 2:
The hour hand is just after 7 but before 8 and the minute hand is on 6.
Solution:
Given, the time is between 7 o’clock and 8 o’clock.
Hour hand being after 7 indicates it is past 7 o’clock.
The minute hand is on 6. So the minute hand has removed 6 × 5 = 30 small divisions, i.e., 30 minutes.
So, the time is 30 minutes past 7 or 7:30.
Example 3:
The hour hand is just after 4 but before 5 and the minute hand is 5 divisions after 2.
Solution:
Here, the hour hand is between 4 and 5 and the minute hand is 5 divisions after 2.
So, hour hand indicates it is past 4 o’clock and minute hand indicates 2 × 5 + 5 = 15 minutes.
Hence, time is 4:15.
Example 4:
The hour hand is just after 2 but before 3 and the minute hand is 2 divisions after 5.
Solution:
Here the hour hand is just after 2 and the minute hand is at two divisions after 5.
Hour hand being after 2 indicates it is past 2 o’clock.
Minute hand being two divisions after five indicates minutes = 5 × 5 + 2 = 27 minutes.
So, the time is 2:27.
Example 5:
The hour hand is just after10 before 11 and the minute hand is at 12. Find the time?
Solution:
Here hour hand is just after10 before 11.
Hour hand being after 10 indicates it is past 10 o’clock.
The minute hand is at 12.
So, the time is 10:00
Example 6:
The hour hand is just after 12 but before 1 and the minute hand is 3 divisions after 5.
Solution:
The hour hand is just after 12 but before 1.
Hour hand being after 12 indicates it is past 12 o’clock.
The minute hand is 3 divisions after 5 indicates minutes =5 ×5+3 =28
so the time is 12:28.
Example 7:
The hour hand is just after 5 but before 6 and the minute hand is 3 divisions after 8.
Solution:
The hour hand is just after 5 but before 6.
Hour hand being after 5 indicates it is past 5 o’clock.
The minute hand is 3 divisions after 8.
It indicates minutes=8 ×5+3=43.
So the time is 5:43.
Example 8:
The hour hand is just after 3 but before 4 and the minute hand is 2 divisions after 9.
Solution:
The hour hand is just after 3 but before 4.
Hour hand being after 3 indicates it is past 3 o’clock.
The minute hand is 2 divisions after 9.
It indicates minutes=9×5+2=47.
So the time is 3:47.
Digital Clock
Digital clock shows us the time digitally using the numbers like this format: Hours: Minutes: Seconds
Ex: 08:40: 05
