Examples on Unit of Mass or Weight

Mass or weight is the measurement of the physical quantity. Mass is the measure of the amount of matter contained in a body. Weight is the force on the object due to gravity. The SI unit of mass is Kilogram (Kg). The SI unit of weight is Newton (N). The kilogram is used to measure the heavyweight object and grams are used to measure low-weight objects. Here are some examples of mass or weight units that help the students score good marks in the exams. We have provided Questions and Answers on units of mass or weight.

Example 3.
Find the weight of an object if the mass is 1 kg and the acceleration of gravity is 9.8m/s².
Solution:
Given,

100 kg = 1 quintal
7500 kg = 75 × 100 = 75 quintals
ii. 12000kg
We have to convert from kilograms to quintals.
1 quintal = 100 kg or
100 kg = 1 quintal
12000 kg = 120 × 100 = 120 quintal
iii. 560kg
We have to convert from kilograms to quintals.
1 quintal = 100 kg or
100 kg = 1 quintal
560 kg = 5.6 quintal

Example 5.
Find the weight of an object if the mass is 5 kg and the acceleration of gravity is 9.8m/s².
Solution:
Given,
mass is 5 kg and the acceleration of gravity is 9.8m/s².
The formula to find the weight of an object is
w = mg
w = 5 kg × 9.8m/s²
Therefore the weight of an object is 5 kg × 9.8m/s²

Example 6.
Vinisha is 10kg less than Vinal who weighs 75kg 560g. What is the actual weight of Vinisha?
Solution:
Given,
Vinisha is 10kg less than Vinal who weighs 75kg 560g.
75 kg 560 grams
-10kg 000 grams
65 kg 560 grams
Therefore, the actual weight of Vinisha is 65 kg 560 grams.

Example 7.
Convert the following into grams.
i. 7 kg
ii. 9.5kg
iii. 12.75 kg
Solution:
i. 7 kg
We have to convert the given mass from kilograms to grams.
1 kg = 1000 grams
7 kg = 7 × 1000 grams = 7000 grams
Therefore 7kg = 7000 grams
ii. 9.5kg
We have to convert the given mass from kilograms to grams.
1 kg = 1000 grams
9 kg = 9 × 1000 grams = 9000 grams
9000g + 500 g = 9500 grams
Thus 9 kg = 9500 grams
iii. 12.75 kg
We have to convert the given mass from kilograms to grams.
1 kg = 1000 grams
12 kg = 12 × 1000 grams = 12,000 grams
0.75 kg = 750 grams
12000 grams + 750 grams = 12750 grams
Therefore 12.75 kg = 12750 grams

Example 8.
The cost of 1 kg grapes is $15.00. What is the cost of 2kg grapes?
Solution:
Given,
The cost of 1 kg grapes is $15.00.
2 kg = 2 × $15 = $30.00
Thus the cost of 2 kg grapes is $30.

Example 9.
Convert the following into metric tons.
i. 1000 quintal
ii. 50 quintal
iii. 250 quintal
Solution:
i. 1000 quintal
We have to convert quintal to metric ton.
1 metric ton = 10 quintal = 10 × 100 kg = 1000 kg
1000 quintal = 1000 × 100 kg = 100000 kg = 100 metric tons
Therefore 1000 quintal = 100 metric tons
ii. 50 quintal
We have to convert quintal to metric ton.
1 metric ton = 10 quintal = 10 × 100 kg = 1000 kg
10 quintal = 1 metric ton
50 quintal = 5 ×10quintal
= 5 × 1 metric ton
= 5 metric tons
Thus 50 quintal = 5 metric tons.
iii. 250 quintal
We have to convert quintal to metric ton.
1 metric ton = 10 quintal = 10 × 100 kg = 1000 kg
10 quintal = 1 metric ton
250 quintal = 25 ×10 quintal
= 25 × 1 metric ton
= 25 metric tons
Thus 250 quintal = 25 metric tons.
