Antemeridian and Postmeridian

A.M and P.M are the Latin words that are used for referring to time. It is frequently used in all types of digital or smartwatches, mobiles, and even computer systems. The abbreviations for A.M and P.M are Antemeridian and Postmeridian. A.M means before noon or midday and P.M means afternoon or midday. Usually, we calculate Time in hours and minutes, and seconds. Each day consists of 24 hours, each hour has 60 minutes and each minute has 60 seconds.

Generally, we see time is displayed in two ways. A.M is used to represent time from midnight (12:00) to noon (11:59) usually written as 12:00 A.M to 11:59 A.M. The 12-hour clock method defines all 24 hours of the day using the numbers 1 to 12 followed by am or pm. 12 A.M is midnight and 12 P.M is afternoon. The 24 hours in a day is divided into two parts – AM and PM. The AM and PM are other conversions of time. In the English system, the day starts at midnight and ends at midnight. It is not always clear what times 12:00 a.m and 12:00 p.m. A.M and P.M mean ante meridiem and post meridiem since ‘noon’ is neither before nor after itself, the terms a.m and p.m do not apply.

Example 1.
Write the following times using a.m or p.m
i. 5:30 in the morning
ii. 5:45 in the evening
iii. 1:30 in the afternoon
Solution:
i. 5:30 in the morning
Morning means before noon. So, 5:30 in the morning means 5:30 A.M.
ii. 5:45 in the evening
Evening means post noon. So, 5:45 in the evening means 5:45 P.M.
iii. 1:30 in the afternoon
1:30 means 1 and a half-hour after the mid-noon. So, 1:30 in the afternoon is 1:30 p.m

Sandhya comes back from school at 3:30 ___. (Tell whether the time is a.m or p.m)
Solution:
Given,
Sandhya comes back from school at 3:30
School ends post noon.
That means Sandhya comes back from school at 3:30 p.m.

Example 3.
Now the time is 8:30 p.m. What will be the time after 4 hours?
Solution:
Given,
Now the time is 8:30 p.m.
8 hour 30 mins + 4 hours = 12 hour 30 minutes.
So, the time after 4 hours is 12: 30 P.M.

Example 4.
How many hours and minutes are there in between 8:00 a.m to 11: 15 a.m
Solution:
11 hour 15 mins
-8 hour 00 mins
3 hours 15 mins
The difference between 3 hours 15 mins.

Example 5.
Write the time 6:45 a.m in words
Solution:
Given the time 6:45 a.m.
Six hours and Forty Five Minutes Antemeridian.
