Subtracting 3-Digit Numbers

In this article, you will learn how to subtract 3-digit numbers with borrowing and without borrowing. In Three-digit Subtraction, we will subtract three-digit numbers and the difference between them. In Subtracting 3-Digit Numbers both the minuend and subtrahend are 3 digit numbers. Go through the entire article to be familiar with the terms related to subtraction and the symbol used etc.

On this page, you will learn what subtraction is, subtract three-digit numbers, solve example problems on subtracting 3-digit numbers with and without borrowing, and so on.

What is meant by Subtraction? | Subtraction – Definition

Subtraction is an important basic arithmetic operation used in our standard life. The word ‘subtraction’ is derived by using two words ‘sub’ which means below or under and ‘tract’ means to carry away or pull. To carry the below or lower part is the final definition of subtraction.

The terms used in subtraction are minuend, subtrahend, difference. The symbol of subtraction is ‘–’ and is called the minus and the number after the symbol must be subtracted from the number before it.

How to Subtract 3-Digit Numbers? | How to Subtract 3 Digit Numbers?

The following process is listed below to find the difference between two 3-digit numbers. The process is given below,

  • First, identify the greater number and smaller number, write the greater number above the smaller number.
  • Start subtraction from the rightmost digit and so compare the upper and lower digits.
  • In the comparison, if you find that the lower digit is small than the upper digit, subtract the lower value from the upper value and write the answer below.
  • If there’s a case that the upper digit is smaller than the lower digit, then borrow 1 from the following number. Now the digit has become greater, you’ll easily subtract the lower value from the upper value and write the solution below.
  • Repeat the procedure the same way until you run out of all the digits.

Subtracting 3 Digit Numbers Examples

Example 1:
Find the difference between the 874 and 621.

Solution:
In the given question, the numbers are 874 and 621.
Now, we will find the difference between the numbers.
The difference is, 874 – 621

So, the difference between the numbers is 253.

Example 2:
Explain how to find the difference between the numbers 436 and 113.

Solution:
The given numbers are 436 and 113.
Now, we can find the difference between the given numbers and write the step-by-step process.
The difference between the 436 and 113 is,

First, identify the smaller number and greater numbers then after the place greater number above smaller number.
Next, start subtracting the numbers from one’s place. The resultant value of 6 and 3 subtraction value is 3. Write that value 3 in one’s place.
After that subtract the values which are in ten’s place. The number 1 is subtracted in 3 the resultant value is 2. The value 2 is put in ten’s place.,
In the subtraction of this 3-digit number. so only 3 places will be there that is one’s, ten’s, and hundreds. Subtract the values in a hundred’s place that is 4 – 1, So put the resultant value 3 in a hundred’s place.
Therefore, the final result of subtraction or difference between the two given numbers 436 and 113 is 323.

Example 3:
Subtract the number 342 from 655 by arranging the numbers in expanded form in words.

Solution:
In the given question, the numbers are 655 and 342.
Now, we need to subtract the given numbers.
First, arrange the given numbers in words and then perform the subtract operation.
The numbers are 655 and 342,
655 – 342 by arranging the numbers in expanded form in words.

= 3 hundreds + 1 tens + 3 Ones
= 313
The step-by-step process for better understanding:
(i) First subtract the one’s place values that is 5 ones – 2 ones = 3 ones
(ii) Next subtracting the ten’s place column values that is  5 tens – 4 tens = 1 tens
(iii) Now, subtract the hundred’s place values that is 6 hundred – 3 hundred = 3 hundred.
(iv) Now add the all resultant places value that is 3 hundres + 1 tens + 3 ones = 313

Therefore, the final result of subtracting the number 342 from 655 is 313.

Example 4:
Subtracting the numbers 457 from 676.

Solution:
In the given question, the numbers are 676 and 457.
Now, we need to perform the subtraction operation between the two given numbers.
First, subtract the values which are in one’s place. Here we subtract 7 from 6 but it not possible. So take a borrow from ten’s place number 7 then the value of one’s place is 16. It is shown in the below figure.
Now subtract 7 from 16, the value is 9, puts the value 9 in one’s place.

Next, we subtract the value which is in ten’s place, the value at ten’s place is 6 because for one’s place subtraction we take a borrow of ten from ten’s place. So the value 5 is subtracted from 6 we get the value is 1.
Now, subtract the values which are in hundred places. The values are 4 and 6. Subtract the value 4 from 6, we get the value 2. put the value 2 at hundred’s place in a column.
Therefore, the final result of subtracting the numbers 457 from 676, to get the value is 219.

Example 5:
Subtract the numbers 745 from 932.

Solution:
In the given question, the numbers are 745 and 932.
Now, we need to perform the subtraction operation in between the given numbers.
First, subtract the values which are in one’s place. Here we subtract 5 from 2 but it not possible. So take a borrow from ten’s place number 3 then the value of one’s place is 12. It is shown in the below figure.
Now, subtract 5 from 12 to get the value is 7, put’s the value 7 in one’s place.

Next, we subtract the value which is in ten’s place, the value at ten’s place is 2 because for one’s place subtraction we take a borrow from ten’s place. The value 4 is subtracted from 2 is not possible, So we take a regrouping from 9, then the value becomes 12. Now subtract 4 from 12, we get the value is  8.

Now, subtract the values which are in hundred places. The values are 8 and 1. Subtract the value 7 from 8, we get the value 1. put the value 1 at hundred’s place in a column. The subtraction process is as shown above.
Hence, the final value of subtracting the numbers from 745 and 932 is 187.

Example 6:
John bought 652 chocolates on his birthday. He distributed 236 chocolates among his friends. How many chocolates are left with him?

Solution:
In the given question,
No of the chocolates John bought is 652
No of the chocolates he distributed to his friends is 236
To find the remaining chocolates, we apply the subtraction
Therefore, to find the remaining chocolates = 652 – 236= 416
Hence, the number of remaining chocolates are left with him is  416.
